Nintendo Switch is the latest console from the Japanese company, which since 2017 has revolutionised the world of gaming with an innovative game system that allows it to be a desktop platform and a portable one with above-average performance has been well received around the world for its versatility.
What is Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo Switch offers a hybrid console concept. We can take it with us to play anywhere or connect it to a “dock” connected to our TV so we can play on it or load the console. Therefore, it is a portable and desktop console. To make this possible, the console includes some Joy-Con controllers. They can be removed at any time to connect them to the screen and turn it into a traditional game console to play at home.
Is it worth buying a Nintendo Switch?
For various reasons, the answer to whether it is worth buying a Nintendo Switch after the arrival of the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X is a resounding yes, for the reasons detailed below.
The games catalogue
Nintendo Switch’s catalogue is not only far ahead of Xbox, but rivals in exclusive to PlayStation. In that sense, it is enough to mention Mario Bros or Zelda games infinity, which are developed exclusively for and by Nintendo itself.
“Nintendo manufactures its games, what they do will work for them.”
Likewise, there is an excellent amalgam of games such as FIFA, NBA, adventure and roll games found in the rest of the desktop platforms.
A new gameplay concept
The primary idea came to revolutionise the video game market. This being its most attractive side being a traditional console, but also the only one that at the same time can be used as a portable, making possible what Xbox or PlayStation can not. They can take your favourite games wherever you want.
This console allows you to play in the place you imagine: on the street, in the car, on public transport, on the plane, visiting friends or parents, in your bed, the possibilities to enjoy a Nintendo Switch are, frankly, infinite.
It even has two versions, the standard console hybrid console and the Lite version whose screen is smaller and fully portable.
In this sense, we highlight the trajectory of innovation that the Japanese have demonstrated and maintained over time.
“In 2002, Nintendo innovated with the touch screen. The same thing happens with Switch: a new way to play doing it from anywhere. They used a good strategy. They showed the standard version that allows you to play on the TV screen and then they released a cheaper one (Lite) only for those who want to use it as a portable”.
Likewise, the video game expert pointed out another additional point about the gameplay proposal of the latest Japanese console.
“By using flash memory like microSD, you have the facility to open games at high speed: you turn off the console, and the game stays where you left off. This is something you don’t have on PlayStation or Xbox. If it were a portable console that did not do that, it would not make sense, because the concept of this type of consoles is not that.
JoyCon: The controllers of the Nintendo Switch
The Joy-Con, the two removable controllers are the basis of its concept of the hybrid console. They allow us to play both on the TV, and in a portable format. This new convertible Nintendo controller can be attached to both sides of the screen to take it with us and play in portable mode. Still, suppose we want to play connected to the television. In that case, we have to separate them from the screen and attach them to ergonomic support included with the console to “build” a traditional gamepad. Finally, there is a third control mode called “tabletop”, which allows you to place the console screen on the table and play with another friend, each holding a JoyCon in their hand horizontally.
One of the most innovative features of the new JoyCon is that they include the new “HD vibration” system developed by Nintendo, which allows us to perceive much more detail than any traditional vibration system. We will feel a much more alive vibration in the palm of our hand thanks to its multiple points of vibration. In this way, for example, we can try to find out how many marbles are hidden inside a box – our JoyCon – just by moving it from one side to the other, as in a minigame of the launch title ‘1, 2, Switch’. It has been officially confirmed that the new Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, sold separately, will also include this HD vibration system.
Apart from its exclusive games, its versatile proposal in its playability, we must also add another important point: its backward compatibility.
On platforms like Xbox and PlayStation, this point, in particular, is still a pending issue with its users. However, on the Nintendo Switch, you can access classic games from previous consoles developed by the “Big N”.
The arrival of the new generation of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X is another point favouring Nintendo Switch. In the UK, we know that these new consoles price would be around £600.
This situation would be beneficial for Nintendo since its latest console would favour its price. With the Christmas holidays, this cost could even go down. The basic version is at approximately £350.
The Nintendo Switch was launched in 2017, and the executives of the Japanese company have ensured that this version will be for 2 more years. That is until 2023; enough time in which there will be more exclusive releases such as countless video games that are published for the three consoles that predominate on the market today.
This factor makes the Switch not only a safe buy, but it could also be the perfect holiday gift at the end of the year.
Cooperative gaming experience
On platforms such as Xbox or PlayStation, more and more importance is given to the online player to the detriment of titles or local cooperative games; opposite case in Nintendo Switch where the great majority of its exclusives are integrated with support for more than 4 players in this modality.
The local player is better implemented than Xbox and PlayStation: Bomberman on Switch allows you to play with up to 8 people in local mode, just like “Super Smash Bros”.
Something that platforms such as the PlayStation and Xbox cannot boast about is customising these consoles as you can with the latest “Big N” console.
In that sense, you can choose from a wide range of accessories for Nintendo Switch such as screen protectors, controls, stickers, wired or wireless controls made by various brands licensed by Nintendo itself, get memories from multiple manufacturers.
“The Nintendo fan likes to personalise. Nintendo Switch accessories are a purchasing factor for many people because they prefer to improve their experience and adapt the console to their liking”.
